Discover the Past
The Historic Village at Allaire was once an iron-producing factory town known as Howell Iron Works, Co. James P. Allaire, an entrepreneur from New York, added homes and industrial buildings to develop the community. At its peak, Howell Works was home to around 400 workers and their families.
Today, the property is a living history museum complete with original buildings and period interpreters. Start your visit at the Row House Visitor Center to browse interactive displays and exhibit halls. Then, explore the bakery, general store, chapel, and more for a glimpse of early 19th-Century life. You can even check out the Pine Creek Railroad to see what train travel was like at the height of the steam era.
Did you know? Allaire State Park’s earliest industrial activity dates all the way back to the 1750s!
If history isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy a day trip to Allaire. You’ll find visitors canoeing, fishing, picnicking, and birdwatching here throughout the year. Large areas of the park have been left in their natural state, and the Manasquan River provides a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. Over 200 species of plants have been identified within the park as well.
Miles of multi-use trails provide the opportunity to admire Allaire’s natural beauty. Novice hikers can enjoy the hiking trails from the main parking area; those with more experience should try the unmarked trails on the south side of the park, which are accessible from a parking lot on Hospital Road.
Allaire State Park hosts over 50 events each year, which means there’s never a bad time to visit! You’ll find workshops and classes on the event schedule almost every day. Some of the park’s most popular annual events include the seasonal flea market, BBQ and Brew Fest, and the NJ Wine and Jazz Festival.
