Asbury Park, New Jersey is a seaside city known for producing a wide range of musical talent. After all, Arthur Pryor, Lenny Welch, and Bruce Springsteen all got their start here! Asbury is also home to a vibrant arts community; there are about a dozen galleries in town showcasing everything from graffiti and graphics to prints. But if you want to see the best of Asbury Park in one place, you need to attend Asbury Underground. This downtown art and music crawl attracts thousands of visitors each year – and, it’s free! Here are some things you should know about the festival.
Your Guide to Asbury Underground
Accomplished artist Patrick Schiavino created Asbury Underground in 2014. He owns Art629 Gallery on Cookman Avenue and wanted to generate some foot traffic downtown. Today, the event brings musicians (many of which have performed on stages around the world) to the city’s art galleries. It’s a wonderful merging of art and music, and it’s popular! More than 10,000 people came out on the days of Underground last year.
This year’s Asbury Underground Festival will be held on October 14 & 15. It will take place in more than 30 venues and feature more than 100 musicians, spoken word artists, and visual artists. From Holdfast Records to Twisted Tree Cafe, you’ll find shows all over Asbury Park. You can even attend the after party! Visit the Asbury Underground website for details and to view the full festival schedule.
If your stomach starts to grumble, there’s no need to worry. Asbury Underground offers beverages and bites from dozens of local eateries. You can also stop by one of the best restaurants in Asbury Park for a casual lunch or gourmet dinner.
