The History of Jersey Pride

Jersey Pride takes place in Asbury Park, a historic city with a vibrant lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. In fact, the city’s inclusiveness dates all the way back to the 1930’s, when it housed gay clubs that weren’t yet legal. Known as a getaway from the bustling metropolitan areas of New York City and Philadelphia, Asbury was a place where people could unwind and be themselves.

Today, Asbury Park, NJ, continues to be a world-class destination for visitors. Restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues can be found throughout downtown, and the city is famous for its art and music scene. In 1998, music producer Shep Pettibone bought the then-vacant Empress Hotel; he opened the nightclub Paradise in 1999, a fabulous establishment that offers everything from country line dancing to drag performances.

Jersey Pride 2018

The 27th Annual Jersey Pride Parade kicks off on Sunday, June 3rd. Head to Asbury Park’s Town Hall at noon and follow the decorated floats, vehicles, and motorcycles down Cookman Avenue. Once you reach the festival grounds, you’ll find incredible performers, great food, and over 150 artisans and crafters. There’s also fun for all ages in the Family Zone. Jersey Pride festivities are held rain or shine, so be sure to check the weather and dress accordingly!
