Oktoberfest is the largest beer festival on the planet. Each year, millions of visitors from around the world flock to Munich to celebrate German culture, the start of fall, and, of course, an abundance of beer! If you can’t make it all the way to Bavaria, New Jersey offers its own take on the event. Here’s why experiencing Oktoberfest in Asbury Park should be on your bucket list.
The History of Oktoberfest
Did you know that Oktoberfest has been an important part of Bavarian culture since the Middle Ages? It all began on October 12, 1810, when Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities of the royal wedding, which included horse races and an agricultural show. (Beer stands, carousels, and other funfair were added later). Today, cities across the world host Oktoberfest celebrations that are modeled after the original Munich event.
Oktoberfest in Asbury Park
When it comes to authentic Oktoberfest festivals in New Jersey, Asbury Park takes the cake. The event is hosted by the Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten and actually lasts an entire month, though the highlight is the street fair on Columbus Day weekend. Festivities include live music, polka dancing, a massive selection of German brews, and traditional German games and competitions. It’s fun for adult beer lovers of all ages!
About the Venue
If you’re not able to attend Oktoberfest this year, there’s no need to worry. The Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten offers a true German experience year-round. The establishment features a 9,000 square foot rooftop Biergarten with 31 premium draft beers and over 60 in the bottle. Feel free to pair your brew with classic Biergarten fare like bratwurst, pretzels, schnitzel, and more. Yum!
No matter when you visit, the Asbury Festhalle is a great place to gather for incredible food, music, and community. (After all, “Fest-halle” literally means “Feast-Hall” in German!) Festhalles can be found in many towns and cities in Germany and range from small neighborhood activity centers to large stadiums. The Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten is open from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday and noon to 2 a.m. on weekends.
