About the Event
Asbury Park’s annual Promenade of Mermaids attracts participants of all ages. Feel free to dress up and take part in the excitement, or just come and watch! Either way, it’s fun for the entire family. If you’re in need of some outfit inspiration, check out the online photo gallery.
This year’s Grand Marshall is Alfonso Sanchez, a Southern California native who loves all things mermaid-related. He led the Sacramento Promenade of Mermaids for years and has participated in activism and fundraising for the protection of waterways, oceans, and marine life. During the Asbury Park Promenade, Sanchez works to get people involved in the community. He encourages participants to “be the voice for those who are too afraid to use it — be the magic.”
There’s so much to see and do at the Promenade of Mermaids! Land-dwellers can enjoy face painting, live music, and arts and craft vendors along the Asbury Park Boardwalk. Of course, the main draw is a colorful parade that winds from First Avenue to the Convention Hall. You’ll see everything from seahorses to jellyfish to mermaids painted in vibrant blues and greens. Prizes for best costume are awarded each year.
